Hoping that Jane is recovering well, pointing out that "it is no pleasure to be up and about in England at this time of year, so that she has chosen the ideal time for being in bed;" mentioning that Edith is well, but that she never leaves the hotel unless forcibly dragged; reporting that Osbert is as well as can be expected and that he (David) is hard at work on a book about America "-- such a dangerous subject." Remarking that the hotel is horribly expensive and that he yearns for the "more interesting atmosphere of Syracuse." Describing a pagan ceremony that took place at the Cathedral fro Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
